Background
1-AGS-UTSC is hosting a student session in which students discuss Asian sustainability problems in cooperation with the AGS Annual Meeting 2010 in Tokyo
This project is a student initiative in which students from diverse nationalities and backgrounds in sustainability fields get together in Tokyo. In collaboration with the AGS-AM 2010, students spontaneously plan and organize the student workshop. The AGS-UTSC is hosting the AGS-AM 2010 Student Project and especially focusing on Asian sustainability because participation of Asian developing countries has been comparably lower in the AGS-AM than that of European countries. As a result, Asian sustainability issues have been less featured. Sustainability researchers should put emphasis on Asia where increasing population, rapid economic growth, and urbanization are of growing concerns, as collateral problems may be derived from those changes in society. Therefore, sustainability issues in the Asian setting must be discussed and its outcome should be reflected to the global context. As well as students from the University of Tokyo, we would like to invite future leaders in Asian sustainability from other countries, discuss sustainability issues in Asia, and spread the outcome to the world community.
The theme of this session is “Growing Asian Cities: Structuring Sustainability Problems.” We put emphasis on interdisciplinarity and internationality; we expect invited students from Asia would represent their own countries and share their sustainability problems with other participants. By clarifying the relationships among sustainability problems, we aim to grasp the whole picture of Asian sustainability.
2-AGS-UTSC is going to make the most of its experiences in the Student Summit for Sustainability (SSS) 2007
AGS-UTSC has experiences in hosting the SSS 2007 in Tokyo. Some students and professors who helped organize the event are still in the University of Tokyo. Thus, the executive board of the AGS-AM 2010 Student Project is accessible to advices and partnerships in managing the Student Project. We are going to enhance the quality of the Student Project with their support.
