Objective
1-To discuss Sustainability problems in the Asian context and establish a platform for information exchange and dispatch
Sustainability issues are mostly discussed among developed nations and the real states of developing countries are less featured in spite of their importance in global sustainability. Due to those reasons, we set the goal of this student session as “establishment of a place for information exchange and dispatch in order to discuss sustainability in the Asian context.” We would like to share and discuss peculiar sustainability problems from Asian countries, clarify the relationships of sustainability problems, and grasp the whole picture of Asian sustainability. As we effectively spread the outcomes to the world community, we would like Asian sustainability issues to be reflected in global discussions. In order to realize the goal, we are preparing for a variety of programs, such as the plenary session, discussions among students, presentation of the outcome, and fieldwork. We are planning to compile the project report in the end and promote our outcomes in SSS 2010 in Colombia.
2-To activate student activities in Asian countries and establish a strong student network
Student communities in Asian Sustainability are still developing in terms of number and recognition. That might be why sustainability’s discussions are usually centered in the Western countries. In order to reflect Asian sustainability issues in the global context, we have to initiate establishing the strong student network in Asia. In this opportunity, we would like to invite students from other Asian countries as many as possible and promote establishing student communities in Asia. In more detail, through the communication between Asian students who have no student communities in their countries, AGS-UTSC can urge them to take initiatives and share management skills and know-how for student project/workshop.
3-To inspire future leaders in Asia for sustainable development
Many Asian developing countries (, such as Cambodia and Laos,) are not provided with opportunities to discuss sustainability issues. A discussion opportunity is emphasized in our project because sustainability discussions require internationality and interdisciplinarity. Through this workshop, participants will acquire discussions skills and see the problems in their countries from the bird’s-eye viewpoints. Ultimately, they are expected to contribute to future Asian sustainability.
