5.TASKS

Study how to structure sustainability problems

【Methodology】 Hints from Prof. Arnim Wiek

structuring1

We are going to use inventory keys described above but try to simplify those because of easy understanding. So, we identify only three keys.

  1. Adverse effects: Bad consequences due to a sustainability problem
  2. Stakeholders: Those who get direct or indirect benefits/losses form a sustainability problem
  3. Structures: Institutions/ Regulations/ Morality/ Culture any surrounding environments that affect or even determine stakeholder’s actions

Step1: Put the discussion topic in center

structuring2

Step2: Divide into 3 spheres

structuring3

Step3: Draw a flow of an adverse effect, stakeholder and structure (1st person)

structuring4

Step4: Draw a flow of an adverse effect, stakeholder and structure (2nd person)

structuring5

Each table repeats to draw a flow 2~3 rounds.

So, this is a example as follow that adverse effects are proposed.

structuring6

Step5: Add more components + connect them

structuring7

Step6: Assessment of the systems

structuring8

  1. Based on the structure map
  2. Focus on the 2~3 keywords
  3. Propose what the positions of the proposed keywords are in the map and explain why they are sustainability problems
  4. Suggest sustainable solutions

【Remarks】

    • Each person has a chance to represent opinions
    • Each participant listens to understand other people’s comments.
    • Other participants can ask questions when someone else is explaining but cannot alter someone’s drawing
    • There is no need to decide the merits of ideas at first.
